Sasha Frere-Jones had a great piece in the New Yorker about laptops in live music. There is beauty in this sentence about Battles performance:
As a visual artist I have always been fascinated with moiré, but never related it to music. As a drummer I now make it my goal to average the overlapping. If a loop is played into the machines slightly off center, and doesn’t line up fully with other loops, Stanier faces the devilish task of finding a beat that averages out the moiré effect of all the overlapping.
I gotta disagree with this tho...
As a dj and Serato user, I can assure you that success as a dj requires that you don't "cue a prerecorded mix." Just like the drummer he describes above and Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis), the dj has to spin with their head up. I have some great playlists, but wouldn't dare to unplug and play in a live situation. A good dj feels the audience. We don't operate in a vaccuum. That d.j. using Serato could be executing a series of sophisticated, improvised blends and combinations. Or he could also easily unplug a cable, hit the space bar to cue a prerecorded mix, and then monkey about with the turntables as if possessed by the muse.
Speaking of laptop music. Go see Tortoise Saturday. Free at the Union! Yeah, they have a Mac onstage too.
From the folks at Ray Ban. DJ culture continues to rear it's lovely head
Speaking of white, yesterday while walking my dogs I saw a dude in a wheelchair struggling across a parking lot to the ice crusted sidewalk and I thought That is bold shit! I wouldn't even bother going out in a chair on a day like this. What a brave guy. Suddenly another gentleman comes charging across the parking lot after the wheelchair guy yelling. I'm thinking, whoa WTF! Turns out the guy had stolen the wheelchair from the St Vinnie's drop box and wasn't the least bit handicapped. Guy went from brave warrior to slimebag in one breath. Perspective can sure change in an instant. Black is white. White is black.
That Scream record kills by the way. My original was stolen years ago. Nice to have it back. White vinyl is SO Slick! We're AmeriRockers!
Is this insulting?
I know it's the "Fashion and Style" section and I think the points may be true, but the author never really speaks of the woman DJ skills. Moving the dancefloor is the key, what you look like is immaterial. Would they write a feature on male DJs and their fashion? Kinda doubt it. There are many great women DJs. Tell me about their music, not what kind of shoes they wear.

What are those? Beads hanging in front of the decks?!? Headphones mess your hair? What is that cross armed move she's displaying? Can you cut like that without using the crossfader? ...erg... I'm just a grump.
